Paul Silver of Jersey Beat had kind words about Broadheart’s What Enormous Things Have Happened album. This is what he said:
“I guess the late ‘90s and Y2K really are back, not only in fashion (think baggy jeans, cargo pants, oversized tees and plenty of layering), but in music, too. Broadheart is a St. Louis ‘supergroup’ formed in 2023, featuring David Shanle (guitarist for Squint, Still, and Like Heaven), Bradley Jokerst (vocalist for The Disappeared), and Gabe Usery (drummer and known for engineering records for Squint and Still). The trio certainly channel that era’s sound, with a mix of breezy emo and melodic post-hardcore. They call their music a ‘21st century love child of early Jimmy Eat World and Seaweed,’ and they aren’t wrong. The songs have the big airy Y2K emo sound down pat, and the vocals have the right amount of grit and angst. The music is big and broad, with lots of open guitar sounds and sustained notes in the vocals. One of the highlights is the melancholic sounds of ‘1000X’ (read that as ‘One Thousand Times’). Another is ‘Halcyon,’ which is one of the more raucous tracks and has more of a ‘90s emo sound than Y2K. One of my big issues with the genre, though, is that a lot of it all sounds very much the same. There’s not much in the way of dynamic changes, everything is played at about the same tempo, and the tone is the same from song to song. To my ears, it gets a bit wearisome. But for the people who love the sound, Broadheart do a solid job.”
